Invasive Species Action Network (ISAN) is dedicated to preventing the human-caused spread of invasive species. They encourage outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds to help in preventing the movement and introduction of invasive species. Boaters, hikers, anglers, campers, bikers, and more all have an opportunity to protect the ecosystems they love from invasive species by taking a few simple steps. For boaters and paddlers, this means following Clean, Drain, Dry practices every time you leave the water.

Clean - Make sure there is no visible dirt, mud, or plant matter on your watercraft. Watercraft can be cleaned using any old sponge or rag you have lying around and fresh water.

Drain - If your boat has a ballast plug, make sure you pull it to allow all of the water to drain. For most kayaks and canoes, simply tipping and leaving your boat upside down should drain any excess water.

Dry - Use a clean towel or sponge to dry up any remaining water. Some invasive species are microscopic and can survive in the smallest amounts of water left in and on a boat. Allowing your boat to completely air dry will significantly lower the risk of transporting invasive species to the next waterbody you visit.

Finally, if you encounter a watercraft inspection station in your travels, be sure to stop. In some states, stopping at inspection states is the law. Either way, it's always a good idea to have a professional inspect your watercraft when possible.
