  Paula Furlich

Paula 'Fred" began her BWCA adventures in 2010 after a battle with breast cancer. A lifelong outdoor explorer, she jumped at the chance to celebrate as a survivor in the wilderness of Northern Minnesota. She grew up camping with her family in a Pathfinder trailer in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and took her own children on tent camping adventures in the US National Parks. Paula lives in Minnetonka, Minnesota with her husband and six chickens. Her children and grandchildren love listening to her Boundary Waters stories. She is training her 3 year-old grandchild to carry the canoe for her so she can continue adventuring into her 80s.

Also Presenting With

Mona Gauthier
Mona guided her first trip to the BWCA in August of 1983. At that time, she was a recent college graduate with limited resources and made do with gear and equipment that was available. Inspired by the peace and beauty of the BWCA, she vowed to return. And she did. In 2000 she established a small outfitting and guiding business, MSB Wilderness Adventures, which is focused on introducing the BWCA to city dwellers who seek a wilderness experience. Today she carries the nickname of "Woodswoman" and has perfected more than just food preparation since that first trip. One thing that has not changed, the goal of each and every trip remains the same: appreciating the beauty and adventures found in the BWCA.

Sue Sullivan
Sue went on her first BWCA trip with Mona in 2010 and fell in love with the experience, the area, the tranquility, the friendships, and the healing. Having learned to canoe at Girl Scout camp, it was her dream to one day do a BWCA trip. Life got in the way for a while, but after experiencing a life changing event, she decided to pursue her dream. She is amazed how her skills, confidence, and love for the BWCA have multiplied since that first trip. She went from no expectations to being the first to sign up for a trip, to improving her paddling skills, to planning the routes, to stepping up to the challenge of the border route, to dreaming of the next trip all winter long. She looks forward to spending more time in the BWCA as she enters her retirement years.

Never Underestimate a Woman with a Paddle
BWCA - main floor Fri 6:30pm-7:15pm
The border route in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wildness hugs the Minnesota-Canada Border. It covers over 194 miles of paddling and 24 miles of portages. Follow the three adventurous women who traveled this route from the westernmost entry point at Crane Lake to the easternmost point at South Fowl and then paddled up the Pigeon River up to Fort Charlotte to hike the Grand Portage Trail. Learn about the route they took, the challenges they faced, the gear they brought, the food they ate, how they finished, and their plans for a new trip. Told in words and pictures. Discover your own Sisu.
