  Gillian Fitzgerald

www.savetheboundarywaters.org/

Gillian first arrived in the Boundary Waters as a youth expedition guide and never turned back, spending several consecutive summers in the Wilderness area. In her seasons away from the North, she pursued trail work in various parts of the country with a special emphasis on timber falling. These days, she stays put in Ely working for Save the Boundary Waters. In her free time, you can find her in the yoga studio, chatting up the local librarians, or battling with her sourdough starter.

Also Presenting With

Sam Chadwick
Since 2014, Sam has helped lead the locally-based, national campaign to protect America's most-visited wilderness from proposed copper mining. As the Associate Director for Save the Boundary Waters and Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness, she's involved in advocacy, communications, inclusion, fundraising, and creative projects for this coalition of 400+ businesses, conservation, access, and hunting & angling organizations and other allies. Sam lives in Minnesota and loves exploring the outdoors with her young kids.

Mona Gauthier
Mona, AKA Woodswoman, led her first trip to the BWCA in August of 1983. At that time, she was a recent college graduate with limited resources and made do with gear and equipment that was available. Inspired by the peace, beauty, adventure, and challenge of the BWCA, she vowed to return. And she did. In 2000 she established a small outfitting business, MSB Wilderness Adventures, which is focused on introducing the BWCA to adventurous souls who seek a wilderness experience but want a little extra guidance. In 2024 she led her 66th BWCA trip.

Doris Kolodji
Doris's first canoe trip in the BWCAW was in 1972 with the Northern Lakes Girl Scouts. She grew up in a family, and in a time, when girls were NOT encouraged in any way to participate in wilderness travel. But, learning wilderness skills with an all girl group was a world of new possibilities for her! She returned over and over as a participant, and then guided teen girls and women for 13 consecutive summers. She directed the program for another 10 years, and continues to be involved with hiring and training staff for this all girl program. She also does private guiding for an Ely outfitter, leading women’s groups. Being with women and girls in the woods has it’s own special magic. Girls and women support each other in a way that empowers EVERYBODY!!

Sue Sullivan
Sue went on her first BWCA trip with Mona in 2010 and fell in love with the experience, the area, the tranquility, the friendships, and the healing. Having learned to canoe at Girl Scout camp, it was her dream to one day do a BWCA trip. Life got in the way for a while, but after experiencing a life changing event, she decided to pursue her dream. She is amazed how her skills, confidence, and love for the BWCA have multiplied since that first trip. She went from no expectations to being the first to sign up for a trip, to improving her paddling skills, to planning the routes, to stepping up to the challenge of the border route, to dreaming of the next trip all winter long. She looks forward to spending more time in the BWCA as she enters her retirement years.

 Women's Q+A Panel: BWCA Trippers
Superior - main floor Sat 10:30am-11:15am
Adventuring in the BWCA comes with unique considerations for women that aren't always widely discussed. From choosing the right clothing, to navigating physical challenges and emotional barriers, there is much to learn- like what is a Kula Cloth, and why is it a game-changer? Join this inspiring multi-generational panel of women with extensive paddling experience as they share their insights and invite your questions! While the outdoors has often been shaped by a male-dominated perspective, this conversation highlights the experiences and expertise of women in the wilderness.
