Cynthia is an active paddler who finds joy and adventure in kayaking the rivers and lakes of eastern Iowa. She enjoys smooth to mildly choppy waters in small Iowa lakes and rivers and thrills at mild riffles. Cynthia spends some time paddling up and down and across the nearby mighty Mississippi and has ventured north several times into the BWCA. Though retired, her days are filled and she can still find it challenging to carve out paddling time. Guided by goals, checklists and a default of YES to paddling offers, she tries to find more time on the water each year. Whether paddling alone or with family and friends, there is always laughter, adventure, and something new.

Sue WileyWhile lots of kids get a car for their 16th birthday, Sue got a canoe. She grew up in southern Maryland, paddling in a back creek that's a tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. Sue moved to eastern Iowa in 2000 and bought a few "cereal bowl" kayaks so that she and her kids could paddle the lakes and rivers in the area. She learned to SUP in southern Maryland sometime around 2010 when her kids hopped onto a friend's boards and the kids said "COME ON!!! You just stand up and GO!" Loving it, she bought an inflatable SUP and never looked back. During the pandemic, fold-up kayaks looked interesting and so much easier to manage loading and unloading that Sue bought two. Sue has paddled in the BWCA once and when absolutely necessary paddles her sailing scow. She's not retired YET but thinks about it more often than she should.

Paddling time is good time. Still, it can seem hard to find the perfect weather, the ideal water, the best time of day, and the ultimate alignment of the stars in the universe before you plan to get on the water. Time passes quickly and before you know it, your boat can remain stowed all summer.
Get ready to be on the water! Join this fast-paced presentation to see how the presenters challenged themselves to paddling every month of 2024. Learn about the preparations and planning, the successes, failures, the joys, and the workarounds of paddling in winter, spring, summer, and fall in the Midwest. You will leave the session with a guide and checklists to use in your own challenge whether that will be 12 days, 12 weeks or 12 months of paddling. We hope you leave with a plan and enthusiasm for paddling more each year!
