Dave Tobey Bio

Dave's love for the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers started when his family began camping at Round Spring in the late 1950's. By 1960 they purchased two small cabins in Courthouse Hollow located less than a mile from what was then Round Spring State Park. It was not long before Dave and his father became permanent residents in Courthouse Hollow along the banks of the Current River. For the next few years Dave's days were spent exploring the river in Walter Carr's wooden johnboat, riding horseback with the Stewart brothers, exploring caves, and hiking trails. At night he would be entertained around the potbellied stove at Carr's Store or visit the home of Round Spring Superintendent Earl "Sandbar" Chilton. Just like the Current River itself life has many surprises around each bend. Even though life currents pulled Dave away from the area he always considered Round Spring to be his home. In 1982 Dave earned his first Flat Hat serving as an Interpretive Ranger at Alley Spring. In 2019 he retired from his position as the Interpretive Supervisor for the Upper Current River. After retirement Dave served as the founding president of the Ozark Riverways Foundation from 2020 to 2022 and continues to serve the friends group as a board member.

Paddling the Upper Jacks Fork River in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways
Killarney - Clarion Hotel Sat 11:30am-12:15pm
The Ozark National Scenic Riverways, a unit of the National Park Service, includes 134 miles along the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers in the Missouri Ozark Region. This unique river system is fed by more than 400 springs. Most of the river can be paddled any time of the year thanks to the mild climate and consistent water supplied by the large springs along the Current and Jacks Fork. The exception is the Upper Jacks Fork River which has a narrow window of opportunity for paddling. During this presentation we will discuss the special features, river levels, and best opportunities to experience the Upper Jacks Fork River.
