  Karin Stapleton Smith

Karin's paddling journey began, as a child, in the cedar strip canoe her father crafted. She is now an American Canoe Association-certified sea kayak instructor. She loves sea kayaking not only as an exciting activity in its own right—especially when surfing and playing in rough waters—but also as a unique mode of transport that allows her to access remote areas which are otherwise unreachable. Karin paddles primarily in the waters of the Apostle Islands, and also enjoys the thrills of whitewater kayaking, whitewater canoeing, as well as canoe tripping. One of her greatest joys is rolling, and teaching rolling (especially Greenland rolling). She plays around rolling whitewater kayaks and canoes and sea kayaks. She’s even rolled a pack raft once - just for the fun of it. Her enthusiasm for rolling, coupled with her love of sharing knowledge, makes teaching this skill one of her favorite aspects of paddling. Karin has found much joy in learning about greenland life and culture, which incorporates many of her passions, including language, history, the natural world, the arctic, water, survival techniques and traditional crafts and practices. She is excited about sharing that knowledge with others.

 Greenland Kayaking
BWCA - main floor Fri 5:30pm-6:15pm
Kayaks have a rich history that spans thousands of years. Karin will explore the origins and cultural significance of the kayak, highlighting its various purposes, including hunting, and the ways kayak skills were passed down from childhood and maintained during the winter months. She will also delve into the living heritage of kayaking in Greenland today, and introduce Qajaq USA, an American club that is part of the Greenlandic kayak organization, Qaannat Kattuffiat. Join us to discover the traditional history of the kayak in Greenland and learn how you can acquire Greenland kayaking skills.
