Boozhoo (Ojibwe greeting)
Steve Ballou is an Interpretive Ranger at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore where he performs a variety of duties mainly focused on connecting people to the wonders of the Islands and the Great Lakes Environment through educational and experiential outreach. As part of connecting the park and its rangers to people, Steve "launched" a kayak ranger program in 2018 that facilitates placed-based interaction with visitors along the mainland sea caves and not so unintentionally makes his job that much more awesome.
A geologist by training, Steve previously worked in an academic setting and served as a seasonal ranger in Yellowstone National Park for over a decade before coming to the Apostle Islands (I still miss geysers). He enjoys several outdoor sports but loves to paddle and backpack the islands more than anything, and is excited to present "Kayaking the Apostle Islands"
(no life jacket required, or for that matter you don't even need a kayak, but bring your paddle in case).

Bear - upstairs Sat 1:30pm-2:15pm
For 54 years, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has drawn people from all over the world to experience the beauty and rugged wilderness of these islands and Lake Superior. What does it take to paddle and camp in this special place? Are you prepared to travel the waters of Lake Superior safely? With proper planning and preparation, you can paddle through sea caves, sleep under the stars, and navigate this inland sea. Join Ranger Steve Ballou to celebrate 54 years of caring for our place on Gitchigami, and start planning your next trip to Apostle Islands.
